Twenty Years

I can hardly believe it's been 20 years since my first book was published by Kensington. Shades of Rose was part of the Denise Little Presents imprint, and I was the happiest writer in the world. My editor--the amazing Denise Little--was a goddess, and I signed contracts with Kensington for 8 more novels over the next few years.

This book has a very special place in my heart for many reasons. I set the story in the Ozark Mountains where my father was raised and where we vacationed often when I was a child. The fictional town of Dogwood is actually beneath what is now Tablerock Reservoir. It was interesting to take a present-day character and place him in a time before the Army Corps of Engineers came through and built the dam that changed the landscape--and many lives--forever.   

Shades of Rose is about justice and retribution, which I'm told is a common theme in my books, but it's also about family. Dylan Marshall lands in the late 1800s face-to-face with his great-great-grandparents.

This was really a lot of fun, as you can imagine. Dylan has a mission--one thrust upon him, but one he must accept, because of the kind of man he is. He stumbles upon a skeleton sealed in a cellar in his time with several bags of gold. A strange vortex grips him and when it releases him, he discovers the skeleton is now a vibrant young woman named Rose. He has come back in time to prevent  her murder.

Shades of Rose has never been available in ebook or mobi format--there was almost no such thing as digital publishing in 1995. Play It Again, Sam

US Marshal Sam Weathers won readers' hearts when he first appeared in my second book, A Willing Spirit, back in 1996. Mail started arriving in droves, begging me to write Sam's story. The problem was, Sam was the "Spirit" in question--yes, he was dead. So whenever I wrote subsequent historical novels set in the geographical areas where Sam had lived in the years prior to his demise, I always tried to use him in the plot as a secondary character. That wasn't difficult, as his larger-than-life persona--think Rooster Cogburn, only younger and sexier--proved useful in many historical settings. So Sam also has important secondary roles in Another Dawn and Stolen Wishes.

Despite having US Marshal Sam Weathers in three books, readers weren't satisfied. They wanted him to have a story of his own. ::sigh:: And, frankly, so did I....

When Lou Aronica invited me to participate in the second Novelists Inc anthology, I was honored. However, when he told me the theme, I was thrilled! I knew instantly that this was the perfect vehicle for the long overdue Sam's story.

The F Word

My name is Deb Stover and I'm a genre slut--technically, a sub-genre slut.  My published novels, short stories, and novellas all fall under the romance and/or women's fiction umbrella.  However, from there they pretty much run the gamut.

Time travel, historical, paranormal (ghosts, reincarnation, angels, curses, witches, devils, fairies), fantasy, contemporary, suspense/mystery, western, sexy and not-so-sexy, humorous and serious, scary and not-so-scary, and...so forth. 

Yep, I'm a serious sub-genre slut....

My brilliant literary agent advised me a decade ago that I should focus.  I cringed.  The "f" word?  F-f-f-f-focus?  Only write one kind of book?  Seriously?

Yes, seriously.  In order to build my readership, I should f-f-f-f-focus on one sub-genre for several books and stop being so, er, promiscuous with my muse.

This is like the desert island question.  If you were stranded on a desert island with only one book to read, what would it be?  Voracious readers consider this a special level of hell.  One book?  Yikes!  What a nightmare...

So, just as I decided to try f-f-f-f-focusing on contemporary paranormal romance for a while, my personal life went into the tank.  My husband's cancer came out of remission and became terminal, my health took a horrible turn, and I spent approximately six years pretty much unable to work.  I finally finished The Gift, which is a paranormal contemporary romantic suspense psychic empath ghost story (big grin), and realized, after losing my beloved husband, that I did not want to f-f-f-f-f-f-focus on this type of book.

Life is too short, and writing is too hard, not to follow our muse.  Yes, I absolutely agree with my brilliant agent's F-word advice.  She's wise far beyond her years.  However, I realize now I need to f-f-f-f-f-focus on the books of my heart.

I need to practice what I preach.  I often tell beginning writers not to write what they don't enjoy reading.  I ask them what type of book first made them sit down at the keyboard and type that first manuscript.  So I asked myself those same questions.

I've just completed a proposal I warned my brilliant literary agent is "classic Deb Stover."  Bless her, she said, "That sounds wonderful."

Let's hope she still feels that way when she reads it.  :)

Writing is hard work--really hard work.  Before we publish, we do it for love, and because our Muse demands we breathe life into the characters who haunt us day and night.  There's no money, no royalties, no deadlines.  It's all for the passion and pleasure of storytelling.  And, if we get lucky, we get both.

I got lucky back in 1995 when my first book was published.  I have to say that almost every one of my published novels have been books of my heart.

I'm ready to get lucky again.
